LaDMA Chased Commercial Drivers

In November 2022, La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) took measures to enforce the use of their Assembly’s Stickers by mounting roadblocks within the municipality to check commercial vehicles that did not have the required sticker. The Assembly took this step to ensure compliance with their regulations and to generate more revenue.

The roadblocks were set up at strategic locations within the municipality, and the Commercial Vehicle Task Force was deployed to ensure that all vehicles passing through had the necessary stickers. The stickers are used to identify commercial vehicles that have been authorized to operate within the municipality and to indicate that they have paid the required fees and taxes to the Assembly.

The exercise was successful in generating revenue for the Assembly, and it also helped to enforce compliance with the Assembly’s regulations. Any commercial vehicle that did not have the required sticker was impounded, and the driver was fined before the vehicle was released.

The exercise was necessary as the revenue generated from the fees and taxes paid by commercial vehicles is an important source of income for the Assembly. LA PUPILS LEARN ABOUT CHILD PROSTITUTION AND HOMOSEXUALITY IN EDUCATION SEMINAR

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development is a decentralized Department in Ghana that is responsible for enhancing the living standards of communities. The Department is also responsible for addressing social problems within the municipality and finding ways to mitigate their effects. Recent reports have shown an increase in child prostitution and homosexuality in the municipality. This has prompted the Department to collaborate with the Municipal Education Office and the officer in charge of girl child education to organize a three-day education program to create awareness of the dangers of child prostitution and homosexuality.

During the program, the resource person, Ms. Eunice N. Abban, provided an overview of prostitution, which she described as engaging in sexual activity with someone who is not a spouse or friend in exchange for immediate payment. Historically, prostitution has involved women as the majority of prostitutes and men as clients. However, young men are increasingly joining the trade and soliciting clients on the streets at night. Child prostitution, on the other hand, involves using children for sexual activities in exchange for rewards or other forms of retribution.

To combat child prostitution, Ghana has laws in place to protect children. The Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29), prohibits allowing persons under the age of 16 to reside in or frequent brothels. Additionally, anyone who lives on the earnings of prostitution or exercises control over the movement of a prostitute for gain is guilty of a misdemeanor. However, children continue to ply their trade in brothels, hotels, clubs, massage parlors, bars, and restaurants, which are all unsafe places for them.

There are various causes of prostitution, including poverty, parental neglect, broken homes, peer pressure, verbal or physical abuse, and unemployment. Early exposure to pornographic materials is also a major cause of prostitution. While pornography is primarily for adults engaging in consensual sexual acts distributed to the public for their sexual pleasure, children often come across it inadvertently and can be groomed or coerced into producing sexual images or exchanging sexually suggestive messages or images. Children who use phones, tablets, and laptops for research are more likely to access pornographic sites.

To prevent child prostitution, stakeholders must lead the crusade against it. This can be achieved through constant stakeholder meetings and educational programs aimed at the general public. The Ghana Education Service, in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, can spearhead programs geared towards educating the public on the dangers of child prostitution. Additionally, parents and guardians must adopt new ways of parenting, such as praising good deeds in public and finding appropriate corrective measures for wrongdoing. By working together, the Ghanaian community can combat child prostitution and create a safer environment for children.

Operation Clean Your Frontage Exercise Takes Place in La Central Business Area

On Friday, Febuary 4, 2023, LaDMA (La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly) organized an Operation Clean Your Frontage exercise in the central business area of La, Accra. 

The exercise was aimed at clearing structures within the pedestrian walkways to ensure free movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The exercise involved the removal of unauthorized structures and materials that encroached on the pedestrian walkways. These included tables, chairs, and signboards belonging to businesses located in the area. The structures had made it difficult for pedestrians to walk along the pavements, leading to congestion and accidents.

The LaDMA team, comprising of officials from the Environmental Health Department, the Town and Country Planning Department, and the Assembly Members, were on hand to supervise the exercise. They worked tirelessly to ensure that all the unauthorized structures and materials were cleared from the walkways, and the pavements were restored to their original state.

During the exercise, the team sensitized the business owners and residents in the area on the importance of keeping their frontages clean and free from encroachments. They urged them to maintain the cleanliness and avoid dumping refuse in unauthorized places.

The exercise was welcomed by the residents and business owners in the area, who expressed their appreciation to the LaDMA for the initiative. They pledged their support to keep the area clean and free from encroachments in the future.

TRAINING ON GENDER RELATED ISSUES

MEETING WITH THE FISHERFOLK COMMUNITY

This move comes on the back of recent reports of an increase in domestic violence cases in the municipality, with many children being affected.

As part of its efforts to tackle the issue, LaDMA has partnered with various organizations and stakeholders in the municipality, including the Department of Social Welfare, the Police Service, and civil society organizations. The partnership aims to identify and provide support to families and children who are victims of domestic violence.

LADMA COLLECTS DATA ON SOLID WASTE ISSUES IN THE MUNICIPALITIES

In the La Dade Kotpon Municipality, a team of field enumerators was tasked with collecting waste information from households and businesses in the area. The team was made up of young men and women who were passionate about promoting sustainable waste management practices in their community.

On a sunny morning, the team gathered at the local council office to receive their assignments and equipment. Each enumerator was given a tablet computer, a pen, and a clipboard. They were also provided with safety gear, including gloves, masks, and boots, to protect them from any potential hazards during their work.

The team split up into smaller groups and set out to different neighborhoods across the municipality. They went from door to door, speaking to residents and business owners about their waste management practices. The enumerators asked questions about the types of waste generated, the methods used for disposal, and the challenges faced in managing waste.

Many of the households and businesses were eager to share their experiences and concerns about waste management. The data collected by the field enumerators revealed some alarming trends. It showed that many households and businesses were disposing of their waste in open spaces or burning it, which was contributing to environmental pollution and health hazards.

The municipality used the data to develop a comprehensive waste management plan that addressed the challenges faced by the community. The plan included initiatives to promote recycling, establish new waste collection points, and provide education on sustainable waste management practices.

Thanks to the efforts of the field enumerators, the La Dade Kotpon Municipality was able to improve its waste management practices significantly. The community was able to enjoy cleaner streets, healthier living conditions, and a more sustainable future.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF YOUTH EMPOWERMENT TRAINING CENTER IN THE LA DADE KOTOPON MUNICIPALITY

The Diaspora African Forum (DAF) and the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly have jointly launched the Diaspora African Forum Youth Empowerment Training Center (DAFYETC) in the La Dade Kotopon Municipality of Accra, Ghana. The official opening ceremony, which took place on January 7, 2022, was attended by esteemed guests of honor such as H.E Dr. Erieka Bennett, the Founder & Head of Mission of DAF, the Municipal Chief Executive of La Dade Kotopon, Hon. Solomon Kotey Nikoi, and the Minister for Communications & Digitalization, Hon. Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

DAFYETC is primarily aimed at empowering Ghanaian youth, particularly in the field of Information Communication and Technology (ICT), by promoting skills training and development. DAF has established a digital call center, which will provide training in call center operations and job creation for certified trainees, and will be led by Mr. Kevin Williams and Mr. Mahar Cooke as Executive Director and Deputy Director, respectively.

The program is designed to equip young people with the necessary skills and confidence to achieve professional and personal success by offering workforce development training and education courses such as ICT, professionalism, effective communication, customer service, and workplace ethics. Participants in the program will have access to a safe and technologically advanced workspace, with computer access, reliable internet service, educational materials, and participant stipends.

The DAF aims to create unique opportunities for both the young people who enroll in this program and the businesses, governmental agencies, and other organizations that choose to partner with them. The program will not only provide valuable, transferable skills to aid participants in obtaining gainful employment but will also create jobs for them to transition into upon receipt of an official DAF certification.

The Minister for Communications & Digitalization expressed her sincere appreciation to DAF for initiating such a great project, which would eliminate unemployment and bridge the digital gap among the youths, especially the female child. She emphasized the importance of bridging the digital gap among the youth, particularly the female child, and eliminating unemployment. She also highlighted the potential benefits of the program for the participants, including creating a second stream of income for them, taking care of their families, and giving back to society.

The MCE-La Dade Kotopon; Hon. Solomon Kotey Nikoi stressed the importance of the training and how the municipality is set to support such an initiative. He urged the youth in the region, especially those within the La Dade Municipality, to take advantage of the proximity and location of the center to maximize the opportunities that abound in the Global Call industry and Information Technology and Communication, which drive the fourth Industrial Revolution.

H.E Dr. Erieka Bennett, the Founder & Head of Mission of DAF, anticipates doing great things in Ghana and the African Union and invites individuals and organizations to support this effort by contacting them directly through the phone number and email address provided. With Africa having the youngest population, the DAF aims to put them in a position to not only dream big but also achieve big.
