LA-GREATER ACCRA, LaDMA EMBARKS ON REVENUE MOBILISATION EXERCISE

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) in the greater Accra Region has intensified revenue mobilisation exercise to retrieve all debts owed to the assembly.At present, a lot of property owners and business operators in the municipality owes the assembly. The move by the assembly comes on the back of non-payment of debts by stakeholders.

Member of the revenue mobilisation task force lead by Mr Daniel Nkrumah, the coordinating director of the assembly visited number of households, institutions, and markets to collect the debts.Responding to stakeholders, Mr Daniel Nkrumah said the exercise was to ensure that the assembly collects all its debts. He said property owners and business operators who would default payment of their debts would be arrested and prosecuted.

Mr Daniel Nkrumah urged all stakeholders in the municipality to pay their debts to avoid prosecution.

Strengthening Community Knowledge and Adherence to COVID-19 Protocols

The Kpeshie Zonal Council, in collaboration with selected Assembly Members, recently embarked on a community sensitization and education program to promote adherence to the Covid19 safety protocols. The program, which was held on the 12th of August 2022, was aimed at strengthening and enhancing community knowledge and attitude towards physical distancing, and advocating against fear, discrimination, and stigmatization of individuals and families infected and affected by the virus.

The program had several attendees, including Hon. Teye Wayo, staff of the Asutsuare Area Council, a representative from the Ghana Health Service, Assembly members, a representative from the Environmental Health Department, and Unit Committee members. During the program, several topics were discussed, including sensitization on hand washing with soap under running water, Covid19 protocols, the importance of nose masks, and social distancing.

The program was geared towards educating the community on the importance of adhering to the safety protocols to prevent the spread of Covid19. As part of the program, hand washing, sanitation, and hygiene products such as Covid19 relief items were given to each household and stationed at vantage points in the target communities to ensure adherence to the protocols.

During the program, a total of seventy-eight (78) homes across six communities were contacted, and the total number of persons reached was Two-Hundred and Three (203). The topics discussed during the program were further reinforced through a demonstration on proper hand washing, proper wearing of masks using the elbow when coughing or sneezing, and the frequent use of sanitizer.

Community members also made some recommendations at the end of the program. They recommended that a task force be formed to ensure strict enforcement of the regulations on Covid19 and that the Council should deploy some people to the marketplaces to check good hygiene practices. They also agreed to uphold their civic responsibilities by maintaining social distancing, keeping the environment clean, wearing nose masks, and regularly washing their hands.

In conclusion, the community sensitization and education program organized by the Kpeshie Zonal Council and selected Assembly Members was a success. It helped to increase community awareness on the importance of adhering to Covid19 safety protocols, which would go a long way in preventing the spread of the virus. The community members’ recommendations should be taken into consideration and implemented to ensure that the community remains safe from the virus.

SERVICES JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL WINS SMART GOVERNORS CONSTITUTION QUIZ COMPETITION FINALS

The Services Junior High School from the Burma Camp was adjudge the winner for the District Quiz competition organised by NCCE, held on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at the Tenashie Junior High School, La.

The winner for the competition was presented with a Plaque, four copies of the constitution, and certificates and books to contestants and their patrons. The first and the second runner-up were also received a plaque, four copies of the constitution, and certificates to contestant’s patrons and books.

Participating schools were the 5BN, Services Junior High School, La St Paul’s Junior High School, La Wireless Junior High School, Osu Home Junior High School, and Association Community Model School.

Mr Emmanuel Mettle, the director for National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) said that the NCCE is embarking on National Quiz Competition dubbed ‘Smart Governors Constitution Quiz Competition’ which seeks to project and promote the significance of the 1992 Republican Constitution to the youth and inculcate in them the brainpower of civic duty for national development. He mentioned that the annual event also pursues to lure active citizenship from the Basic school pupils to enable them to play a part in the promoting and supporting Ghana’s democracy

According to Mr Emmanuel Mettle, the Ghanaian students has been acknowledged as a most important foundation of human capital and are key agents for socio-culture, economic and political development in our present dispensation. Moreover, he mentioned that it is important to nurture and harness the intellectual abilities of the students by inculcating into them the constitution for Ghana and national development.

The intents of the quiz competition was to create awareness of the Ghana Constitution,LaDMA Bye-Laws and to test civic knowledge of the students.Mr Emmanuel thanked the MCE and the assembly for their support for the program.

Empowering LA and Airport Police 1&2 JHS Youth Through Community Sensitization on the Dangers of Drug Abuse

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development has taken a proactive stance in organising a series of educative programs targeted at the youth to positively change their mindset on the use of drugs and other harmful substances. These programs became necessary as the stakeholders in the community are facing increasing numbers of youth engaged in the use of drugs, resulting in a high school dropout rate. In collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NCC), a two-day education on the effects of drugs and other substances was organised for some selected public schools and youth in La. The program brought together youth from all the ten electoral areas of LaDMA for the exercise.

NCC is under the Ministry of the Interior, Ghana, and exists to implement provisions of existing legislation and international conventions on narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursor chemicals through enforcement and control, education and preventive measures, as well as treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts. The Greater Accra Regional Narcotics Control Commission team that came for the program was led by Mr. Abdul Aziz Ali, and other officers, including Kwamena Sekyi Aidoo, Josephine Asare, and Sandra Thompson.

The program was opened by Bonaparte Ashitey Ollennu, the unit head for the Community Development. In his submissions, he highlighted several complaints by residents of La to the Municipal Chief Executive about excessive smoking of Indian hemp and the use of illicit drugs by the youth in the community. The Department of Social Welfare & Community Development was tasked by the MCE and Traditional Council to help educate and find out why the youth engage in this act.

Mr. Abdul Aziz Ali, the team lead for the program, introduced the subject by asking participants what a drug is. He defined a drug as a medicine or other substance that has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. He went further to explain that drugs have caused severe harm to people in the country. He said that drug use could result in bad temper, madness, partial disability, and death among other effects. Mr. Abdul Aziz Ali advised that one person’s medication should not be given to another person, but instead, a sick person should be encouraged to seek medical attention or a doctor’s prescription.

The symptoms of drug abuse were outlined, including stealing, darkening of fingertips and lips, unusual smell and dirty clothes, frequent use of sunglasses, red or bloodshot eye, and lack of interest in work, school, church, etc. The effects of drug use include damaged liver, suicide, deformed children, premature birth, deformity of the body, poverty (spending all money on drugs), and many more.

A video presentation was used to illustrate the dangers of drug abuse, including three case studies. Paa Joe Odonkor, a BBC journalist and drug addict, narrated his life story of dealing and using drugs. He got quick money, bought expensive cars, and lived in luxury, but in the end, he became a beggar and relied on the benevolence of the public for his survival. Another man, Amakye Kwamena Boakye, narrated how he started taking in hard drugs under the influence of some Nigerian friends in 1991 and continued in the act for fifteen years. He said he has not been able to get closer to a woman. A young lady named Blessing Afia Arthur, in her video, said she dropped out of school in JHS 3, found gambling as a trade, and eventually got into drugs. She also shared how she capitalized on her innocent looks and beauty to charm unsuspecting men to get money from them. She resorted to sleeping with different men to get money for drugs.

LaDMA HOLD TWO DAY TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR MSMEs ON BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL LITERACY

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) in collaboration with OZE and SSNIT on Monday, August 1, 2022 has organised a 2-day training workshop on Business and Financial Management for over 42 Micro Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in the municipality.

The training serve as a synopsis of a set of measures being embraced by the assembly to ensure that Micro Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) can function on budget preparation and implementation, accounting financial recording , cash and accounts super vision as well as personal pension plans.

The officials from SSNIT encouraged participants to join the SSNIT scheme in other to enjoy a good life after retirement.

Miss Sarah Afua Dede the director for Ghana Enterprises Agency (LaDMA) said that the need for the training was to ensure that, the MSMEs in the municipality could compete with other world where there is a comprehensive range of positive cash flow for smooth business operation. She said ‘today every country is struggling for economic prosperity ‘and mentioned that it’s tough for the new entrepreneurs in the municipality who have never learnt how to budget and plan to achieve financial security.

 Miss Joana Nartey believe that the training would go a long way to bring self-restraint and transformation into the sector.

Some of the participants expressed their happiness and satisfaction for the workshop and urged the organisers to consider it as a yearly programme.

GET RID OF INFORMATION DELAY

The leader of DPAT team Mr Percy Anaab Bukati has described delay in release of information during the DPAT assessment as a canker, which the assemblies as a matter of urgency must get rid of.

Mr Percy made this call when his team visited the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) for the 2 days DPAT assessment on Monday, July 25, 2022.

Mr Percy expressed his worry at the meeting held with the management team of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly. The visit was to assess the performance of the Assembly for the year 2021.

According to Mr Percy, the two days exercise will be done within schedule. He urged the management team to make all information needed available to avoid late exit. Mr Percy mentioned that, the reasons for the late exit beyond the normal working hours was because of delay in the release of information to the DPAT team and the relaxation of the team waiting for information to work on.

Mr Percy appealed to the management not to endanger both parties and called for the release of information on time to enable them work within stipulated time.

Rev Solomon Kotey Nikoi, the Municipal Chief Executive for La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) bemoan the late short notice acknowledged from DPAT team for the assessment and mentioned that knowing what was at stake, his management has put together all the necessary document and information for smooth running of the exercise.

Rev Solomon Kotey Nikoi assured the DPAT team of the assembly support to enable them to work swithout fear or favour.

LASSA FEVER SENSITIZATION

Lassa fever is a viral illness that can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, as well as through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons. It is a severe illness that can lead to death if not detected and treated early enough.

In light of this, LaDMA health department has taken the initiative to sensitize the public on the prevention and management of Lassa fever. As part of its efforts, a Lassa fever sensitization campaign has been organized to educate the residents of the municipality on the symptoms, transmission, and prevention of the disease.

The sensitization campaign is aimed at raising awareness on Lassa fever and encouraging residents to adopt preventive measures such as maintaining good hygiene, avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings, and seeking medical attention if they experience any symptoms of the illness.

The campaign will involve community outreach programs, health talks in schools, and radio jingles in local languages to ensure that the message reaches a wider audience. LaDMA health department has also provided guidelines on the prevention and management of Lassa fever to healthcare workers in the municipality.

It is essential to note that early detection and treatment of Lassa fever can save lives. Therefore, it is crucial that residents of LaDMA take this sensitization campaign seriously and adopt the necessary preventive measures. LaDMA GENERAL ASSEMBLY ORDER TO CLOSE HYDE OUT HUB

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly at its emergency General Assembly Meeting on Monday, July 19, 2022 ordered the Municipal Security (MUSEC) to close down Hyde Out Hub, a popular nightclub at La noted for allegedly promoting Nudity and indecent exposure of young girls through entertainment.

The owner of the Hyde Out Hub is operating without a permit. The place is noted for selling illicit drugs (India Hemp). After deliberation, all 15-assembly members voted for the area to be close down.

The municipal was noticed by this action when a video of these incidents were circulating across the internet, which was tarnishing the image of the Municipality.
