Strengthening Community Knowledge and Adherence to COVID-19 Protocols

The Kpeshie Zonal Council, in collaboration with selected Assembly Members, recently embarked on a community sensitization and education program to promote adherence to the Covid19 safety protocols. The program, which was held on the 12th of August 2022, was aimed at strengthening and enhancing community knowledge and attitude towards physical distancing, and advocating against fear, discrimination, and stigmatization of individuals and families infected and affected by the virus.

The program had several attendees, including Hon. Teye Wayo, staff of the Asutsuare Area Council, a representative from the Ghana Health Service, Assembly members, a representative from the Environmental Health Department, and Unit Committee members. During the program, several topics were discussed, including sensitization on hand washing with soap under running water, Covid19 protocols, the importance of nose masks, and social distancing.

The program was geared towards educating the community on the importance of adhering to the safety protocols to prevent the spread of Covid19. As part of the program, hand washing, sanitation, and hygiene products such as Covid19 relief items were given to each household and stationed at vantage points in the target communities to ensure adherence to the protocols.

During the program, a total of seventy-eight (78) homes across six communities were contacted, and the total number of persons reached was Two-Hundred and Three (203). The topics discussed during the program were further reinforced through a demonstration on proper hand washing, proper wearing of masks using the elbow when coughing or sneezing, and the frequent use of sanitizer.

Community members also made some recommendations at the end of the program. They recommended that a task force be formed to ensure strict enforcement of the regulations on Covid19 and that the Council should deploy some people to the marketplaces to check good hygiene practices. They also agreed to uphold their civic responsibilities by maintaining social distancing, keeping the environment clean, wearing nose masks, and regularly washing their hands.

In conclusion, the community sensitization and education program organized by the Kpeshie Zonal Council and selected Assembly Members was a success. It helped to increase community awareness on the importance of adhering to Covid19 safety protocols, which would go a long way in preventing the spread of the virus. The community members’ recommendations should be taken into consideration and implemented to ensure that the community remains safe from the virus.
